Roofing Materials Prices

When looking to replace your roof, or find roofing products for a new construction, your options are many. We will explore some of these options and roofing materials prices.

3-Tab Shingles

These shingles have a warranty of 20 to 25 years. The majority of homes in nearly every neighborhood have this shingle design. Prices for this shingle ranges from $70 to $75 per square. One square of roofing will cover 100 square feet, or an area of 10’ x 10’.

The Dimensional Shingle

The dimensional shingles have warranties ranging from 30 years to a ‘prorated’ lifetime. The prices for the 30-year shingles start at $87 per square, the lifetime warranty shingles start at $120 per square. A starter strip and special ridge cap are necessary to use this shingle.

The Ice & Water Shield

The ice & water shield is a product that is purchased in a roll and is applied to the house’s eaves. The majority of city codes require that this underlayment extend two feet inside the home’s exterior wall. This shield protects against the back up of ice. The price of this material begins at $55 for a 1 ½ square roll. This roll of material measures 50’ x 3’, this product is also useful in valley areas and in areas where penetrations have occurred through the roof.

15 & 30-Pound Tar Paper or Felt

This product is applied to the decking of the roof after the ice and water shield has already been laid. It is also purchased in a roll. This product absorbs the condensation that can form under shingles. The 15-pound Shinglemate felt is widely used and recommended for the majority of roofs. It is recommended because it is reinforced with fiberglass and lays much flatter than its organic counterpart does. A four-square roll of Shinglemate costs $44, whereas organic felt only costs $24. The 30-pound, which is generally used for tile or cedar shakes, is $24 for a two-square roll.

Turtle Vents

Turtle vents are static roof vents and are used to ventilate attics. They have no moving parts. The turtle vents cost between $10 & $13 each.

Ridge Vents

The Ridge vent is used instead of the turtle vents. The ridge vent is installed at the house’s peak. It comes in 4’ plastic sections or in a roll of plastic mesh. These vents cost $5 per foot.

Turbines

Turbines are vents that actually spin to suck the air out of the attic. These vents cost $60 each.

Broan Vents

These vents are used to ventilate interior range top and bathroom fans. The small vents are used in the bathroom and the large are used for the range top. This vent has a flapper that opens once the fan is turned on and closes when the fan is shut off. The small vent is $24 and the large vent is $36.

Plumbing Stacks

Plumbing stacks are also used for the ventilation of the home. Costs are $22 for a top shallow pitch, $29 for a top high pitch.

Valley Metal

Valley metal is available in various widths. All widths come in 10’ long sections. The cost for an 18” wide section is $24 and $26 for a section that is 24” wide.

Drip Edge

The drip edge is placed at the edge of the roof in order to keep water away from the fascia board. This edge extends under the shingles for 3” and then wraps down the fascia board for 1 1/2”. A 10’ piece costs $5.50.

Wall Tins

Wall Tins are used to ‘flash’ areas on the roof that meet up with a chimney or a wall. These are installed one at a time. The installation requires alteration between the tin shingle and the roof shingle. A wall tin is a piece of metal that is 3″ x 5″ and has a 90° angle in the middle. Wall tins cost $0.50 each.

Counter Flashing

Counter flashing (reglet flashing) is used over an exposed wall tin in an area that would not allow a piece of tin under the siding (for instance, a brick chimney or stucco wall). To install this flashing, a 1/4” deep and 1/8” wide
groove needs to be cut into the aforementioned wall or chimney. The cost of this item is $22 for a 10’ piece.

Nails Needed to Install Various Shingles

To install a 3-tab shingle, 1″ nails are necessary. These nails cost $39 a box. To install a dimensional shingle, 1 1/4″ nails are needed. These nails cost $40 a box. Generally, one box of nails can lay 16 to 18 square of the shingles. To install the ridge vent, 2 1/2″ to 3″ nails are needed; these nails cost $1 per pound.

Hammer Tack Staples

Hammer Tack Staples are only used to attach the felt paper and the ice and water shield. These staples cost $7 for each box.

Silicone

Silicone should be utilized to divert water. Some of the things it can be used on are exposed nails, flashing seams
and sealing the shingles to metal. A good brand of silicone will usually cost about $5.50 a tube.
